The White Sox acquired Jake Eder at last season’s trade deadline in exchange for Jake Burger. Eder was a 4th round pick out of Vanderbilt in the 2020 draft. At Vanderbilt, Eder pitched as both a starter and reliever. He flashed big potential when he recorded a 3-inning save over Michigan to win the 2019 College World Series. His coaches have consistently praised his commitment and drive to improve every day.

Eder made an impressive debut in Double-A Pensacola. He posted a 1.77 ERA in 15 starts before an elbow injury requiring Tommy John surgery. This surgery sidelined him for the entire 2022 season. Before the trade, Eder started nine games across Single-A and Double-A within the Marlins organization.

In his short time in Double-A Birmingham, Eder struggled with an 0-3 record and 11.42 ERA in only 5 starts. The control wasn’t quite there as he hit six batters in those five starts. Post-surgery, his fastball velocity saw a slight decrease, but his second full year post-surgery will be crucial for a more accurate assessment.

Scouting grades are based on a 20-80 scale where 50 is league average. Every 10 points away from there represents 1 standard deviation away. First number is current grade, second number after the slash is a potential future grade.

The slider is the big-time pitch for Eder. It’s a high 70’s/low 80’s look with impressive horizontal movement. The changeup has improved as well as his overall command. With his arsenal of pitches and improved command, Eder has the makings of a solid big-league starter, capable of making significant contributions on the mound.
