The Cubs signed Christopher Morel back in 2015 for $800,000. As a 20-year old last season, Morel played his first year of full-season ball. The first thing I noticed when researching him is his weight is listed at 140 pounds. I immediately checked more sources and mlb.com, Fangraphs and milb.com had him at 140. He’s still very young, but he needs to add strength. An interesting note is that the Cubs also signed Morel’s younger brother, Rafael, for $850,000 in 2018.
Scouting Grades

In 2019, Morel hit .284 at South Bend with six homers and 31 RBI. Morel has quick hands that help him generate above-average bat speed and power. His huge problem right now is his approach. He only walked 4% of the time last season! He basically swings at everything and he has a very pull-happy hitter too. These are characteristics that are pretty typical of young hitters, especially with no college experience. He’ll need to focus improvement there as he ascends through the Cubs system.
Morel has solid speed, and an above arm at third that will play at the big-league level. He’s played some shortstop and could play outfield too, but third seems to be the best fit. The Cubs have Morel on the 60-man roster for 2020, but not the 40-man; he is part of the Summer Camp roster working out in South Bend.
