He was a starter in college at Wichita State and began in the White Sox system as a starter, but later moved to the bullpen in 2019. His stuff looked better out of the bullpen and he shot up to Double-A last year. He got time with the big league club in Spring Training this year. He is a reliever who could end up with some big-league time in a weird 2020 season.

Scouting Grades

Scouting grades are based on a 20-80 scale where 50 is league average. Every 10 points away from there represents 1 standard deviation away. First number is current grade, second number after the slash is a potential future grade. FV means Future Value overall

Heuer’s fastball is usually 94-96 and tops out at 98 mph (has definitely increased since his move to the bullpen). It also has a bit of sinking action which could make him a successful groundball pitcher. His changeup has good sink and actually has a really high spin-rate, which is weird but also intriguing. His cutter/slider is an option that’s been really good against righties. Heuer also has a uniquely low arm-slot which helps to deceive hitters, especially righties.

After struggling to have enough control to be a starter, Heuer has looked promising out of the bullpen. Fangraphs is much higher on him as a prospect than mlb.com in terms of rankings, his ceiling is as a set-up man in the White Sox bullpen. We may get to see him get some time this season with the Sox.
