The Sox grabbed Thompson in the second round of the 2019 draft and signed him for $2.1 million out of Cypress Ranch High School in Texas. He’s only pitched two innings of pro ball so you can’t really take anything from his pro career yet, but there’s a reason the Sox gave him $2.1 million.

Scouting Grades

Scouting grades are based on a 20-80 scale where 50 is league average. Every 10 points away from there represents 1 standard deviation away. First number is current grade, second number after the slash is a potential future grade. FV means Future Value overall

Thompson was frequently in the low to mid 90s with his fastball in high school topping out at 96 mph. That being said, there is probably still a little more room to add velocity as he develops. He actually has both a curveball and a slider; the slider is more flat while the curveball shows a little more depth to it. Both have been a bit inconsistent, but there is plenty of time for Thompson to develop them. He’s really just starting to throw his changeup, but it has been a promising start to a pitch he’ll need to have to reach the majors.

Thompson is obviously very young so there’s not much to look at in terms of his stats so far, but there is a lot of promise for a potential major leaguer. The ceiling for Matthew Thompson is probably a 3-4 starter that could reach the big leagues by 2023 or 2024.
