Stiever was a not a top recruit coming out of high school, but he was an all-around good athlete: an all-state wide receiver/cornerback in Wisconsin. Stiever went on to play at Indiana: where he led the Big Ten in strikeouts before being drafted in the fifth round in 2018. He spent 2019 between Single-A Kannapolis (4-6 4.74 ERA 14 starts) and High-A Winston-Salem (6-4 2.15 ERA in 12 starts).

Scouting Grades

Scouting grades are based on a 20-80 scale where 50 is league average. Every 10 points away from there represents 1 standard deviation away. First number is current grade, second number after the slash is a potential future grade. FV means Future Value overall

Stiever’s fastball sits 92-96 mph and tops out at 98 with a bit of sinking action that may be beneficial in inducing more ground ball contact. He counters his fastball with a good curveball that he controls well. Stiever’s changeup and slider need to develop more for him to become a starter. Right now, his solid command and fastball/curveball combination looks like it could play well in the White Sox bullpen.

We could see Stiever in Chicago as soon as 2021, but with this season’s delay and his missed time this spring with forearm tightness, it’s possible Stiever’s development could take a little bit longer.
